How much is GST in New Zealand?
GST (goods and services tax) in New Zealand is a flat 15%. It applies to most goods and services sold by GST-registered businesses, and it has been 15% since 1 October 2010, when it rose from 12.5%. This GST calculator works out the GST on any amount, whether you need to add GST to a price or pull it out of a GST-inclusive total.
How to add GST to a price
To add GST, multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.15. For example, a $100 product becomes $115 once you include GST — $15 of which is the GST. The GST calculation is the same for any figure: price × 1.15 gives the GST-inclusive price, and price × 0.15 gives the GST itself.
How to remove GST from a GST-inclusive total
To remove GST from a GST-inclusive amount, divide the total by 1.15. The GST component of an inclusive price is the total × 3 ÷ 23. So a $115 GST-inclusive total contains $15 of GST and $100 excluding GST. The calculator above does both directions automatically — just switch between GST exclusive and GST inclusive.
GST-exclusive vs GST-inclusive prices
A GST-exclusive price is the amount before GST is added; a GST-inclusive price already contains the 15% GST. Business-to-business quotes often show a GST-exclusive figure, while shelf prices to consumers are GST inclusive. A tax invoice should clearly show the GST amount so the buyer can claim it in their own GST return.
Do I need to register for GST?
You must register for GST if your business turnover from taxable goods and services is over $60,000 in any 12-month period; below that, registration is optional. Once registered, you add GST to your sales, claim GST on your expenses, and file a GST return with IRD — usually every two or six months. Keep every tax invoice, because GST you pay on business costs can be offset against the GST you collect.
Using our GST calculator to work out the GST
Use our GST calculator to find how much GST sits in any figure: enter an amount and choose whether it’s a GST-exclusive amount or a GST-inclusive price. To calculate GST the tool can add GST to a price or reverse GST out of a total, showing the correct GST content either way. It’s the quickest way to work out the GST to add to a quote, or to find the GST-inclusive price of a product or service.
If you’re GST registered you charge GST on what you sell and can claim back the GST on business costs as a GST credit, then pay the difference on your GST return by the due date. Most exports and some supplies are zero-rated, meaning GST applies at 0%. Whether you need to add or subtract GST, this New Zealand GST calculator handles inclusive and exclusive prices so your invoices and pricing stay correct.
